Writing Intensive Courses

 

What are Writing Intensive Courses?

Writing Intensive courses are courses in various disciplines which meet writing intensive guidelines in regard to the amount of writing assigned, the feedback provided for writing assignments, and the percentage of the class grade that is based on writing.

 

Why should I take a Writing Intensive Course?

All courses designated as writing intensive meet the graduation requirement of English W350.  Instead of enrolling in English W350 Advanced Expository Writing, you may enroll in a discipline-specific course that has been authorized as Writing Intensive.

Which courses are classified as Writing Intensive?

• ENG-A303          Topics in African American Studies
• ENG-W321        Advanced Technical Writing
• ENG-W350        Advanced Expository Writing
• ENG-W365        Theories and Practices of Editing
• ENG-W395        Individual Study of Writing (3 cr.)
• ENG-W400        Issues in Teaching Writing
• ALL ENG-E courses and ENG-L courses at the 300-level or above (EXCEPT ENG-L390 Children’s Literature and ENG-L391 Literature for Young Adults)

In addition, Senior Seminar courses in the disciplines of Psychology (PSY-P457 Topics), History and Political Science (COAS-S400 Social Science Seminar), and Sociology (SOC-S470 Senior Seminar) meet the Writing Intensive requirement, but students enrolled in these courses must have declared a major in the field.

Prerequisites: ENG-W131 and ENG-W132

All students enrolling in a Writing Intensive course must have completed their Elementary Composition courses (ENG-W131 and ENG-W132).  A student wishing to enroll in a Writing Intensive course who has not completed W131 and W132 must have the instructor’s permission to enroll.
