KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) chapter took its fourth consecutive regional title in SIFE U.S. collegiate competition April 2 in St. Louis, Mo. The chapter will advance to the national competition May 23–25 in Kansas City, Mo. “I am so happy that our IU Kokomo SIFE students did it again,” said School of Business Dean Niranjan Pati, Ph.D. “They completed about 20 projects that enriched the lives of those in the community around us and internationally. Their showcasing of those projects impressed the review board at the regional competition.” Pati also congratulated School of Business faculty members Kathy Parkison and Joan Hoch, who advise the SIFE team as Sam Walton Fellows. In 2003–2004, IU Kokomo’s SIFE members spent more than 1,000 volunteer hours in activities. The chapter collaborated with engineering students in Mexico on marketing plans for a voice-activated wheelchair. Chapter members collected and donated school supplies to teachers in Ukraine, Guatemala and Sierra Leone. Local projects included a “Cookie Mining” (economics education) workshop in North Miami Schools; a “Mini Economy” course in Logansport schools; International Education week activities in Logansport and Tipton; presentations on resumes and interviewing for clients of WorkOne; and an upcoming public forum on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act April 21 at IU Kokomo. A global, non-profit organization created by Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, SIFE sponsors 1,600 university campuses in 40 countries. Students in SIFE teach others about the principals of free enterprise, market economics, entrepreneurship and business ethics. Eighteen SIFE teams from four-year colleges competed at the St. Louis regional, presenting annual reports of their year’s activities to a judges panel composed of business executives. A four-member team presented the IU Kokomo report at competition: Chris Dabelow of Amboy, Brian R. van Camp Jr. of Bunker Hill, and Jessica Arnold and Katryna Bandy, both of Kokomo. “The students represented IU Kokomo well,” said Parkison. “The judges were very impressed with their verbal presentation, their PowerPoint®, and their annual report. The overall judging comments may be some of the best we have ever received.” Other SIFE participants in 2003–2004 included (listed by hometown):
Burlington: Niki Anderson.
