Miller presents ‘Last Lecture’ on January 19

January 6, 2006

KOKOMO, Ind.—Herbert C. Miller, Ph.D., L.H.D., professor emeritus of international business, steps to the lectern January 19 as the next presenter in the campus’ 60th Anniversary Last Lectures series. Because of growing positive response to the first three Last Lectures offered in fall 2005, the talks will now be staged at the IU Kokomo Art Gallery. (The originally announced site for the talks was the Kelley House.) Talks start at 6 p.m.; admission is free and open to the public.

Still engaged as an informal advisor to international students and faculty at IU Kokomo, Miller plans to speak on “The Flat Earth.” His title refers to the tremendous impact that technological innovations in transportation and communication have had in “flattening the earth,” that is, removing or reducing physical and distance barriers between peoples and cultures.

On March 28, Associate Professor of Nursing Linda Wallace, R.N., Ed.D., will present “The Passion of Commitment: Beyond Just Getting By.” Professor of Botany Gary Dolph, Ph.D., will close the series on April 20 with “Nature—Then and Now,” a discussion of ecological deterioration and worldwide energy problems.

As an honored tradition in higher education, faculty members offer “last lectures” to convey ideas they would like to leave with their audience, as though the talks were, in fact, their final lecture to their institution.
