Becker and Parkison tie for Rich Teaching Excellence award

July 17, 2003

KOKOMO, Ind.—Associate Professor of Psychology Angela Becker, Ph.D., and Associate Professor of Economics Kathy Parkison, Ph.D., are co-winners of the 2003 Claude Rich Award for Teaching Excellence, presented to outstanding Indiana University Kokomo faculty. The award commemorates Howard County native Claude Rich, who retired from Indiana University after 44 years of service.

Becker and Parkison will be honored at the August 22 Fall Convocation.

Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Stuart Green noted that this marked only the second time in campus history that two full-time faculty members tied for the Rich award. Becker and Parkison’s nomination materials reflected “two excellent candidates,” according to the selection committee “They felt strongly that both should receive the award,” Green said.

He called the winners “ground breakers, in terms of curriculum development and pedagogy,” who have “stretched beyond their respective disciplines to teach in our Learning Communities program.”

“Whether in one’s own discipline or in an interdisciplinary environment, teachers like Kathy and Angie always search for new ways to help their students ask the most interesting question. Kathy carries this theme through in her work as an advisor to SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) and with the campus’ Center for Economic Education,” he said. [Parkison also directs the School of Business’ Master of Business Administration program.]

Becker “has led her colleagues in reviewing the psychology program and recommending significant changes to improve the program for our students,” Green added. “In addition, Angie has provided numerous undergraduate research opportunities for her students, a commitment to teaching she shares with several other Claude Rich winners. “

The vice chancellor thanked the selection committee and its chair, Kasem K. Kasem, Ph.D., for their work.
