ChemistryStudent Spotlight: Aubrey Finney
Aubrey Finney found her love for chemistry as a high school student, learning the ins and outs of the science. Finney is using that passion to excel at Indiana University Kokomo as she pursues her bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a biology minor.
Finney has spent most of her time at IU Kokomo in the research labs. She works closely with Kasem K. Kasem, professor of chemistry, as she performs her research.
“Dr. Kasem has been a great mentor for me, and he’s given me so many different opportunities to learn and explore the different areas of chemistry,” Finney said.
Last spring, Finney studied alternative energy as it relates to hydrogen, and nanoparticles. She also participated in the Undergraduate Research Summer Institute, continuing her studies of nanoparticles.
Finney’s work does not stop there. She has assisted Kasem with two research articles. They published “Photoelectrochemical Production of Hydrogen in Aqueous Suspensions Nanoparticles Composites of CdS/ZnS,” in an academic journal, “Materials Sciences and Applications.”
She also interned with Kasem, studying electrochemistry and analytical chemistry. Finney said she enjoys analytical chemistry because it involves lab work, measurements and using equipment. She continues to assist with and contribute to Kasem’s research.
In addition to her many accomplishments, Finney hopes for an internship at Dow AgroSciences this summer.
“I would like to do research and development and hopefully continue to work in a lab,” Finney said. “I love all the lab work I’ve done, and I want to continue it in my future career.”
Finney is a senior at IU Kokomo and will graduate in December 2012. She hopes to pursue a master’s degree.
