English Degree Requirements

There are three concentrations available for students wishing to major in English. Each of which requires students to take 120 credit hours, including approximately 57 credit hours in the Bachelor of Arts General Education Requirements for Humanities & Social Sciences.

B.A. in English (Language and Literature Concentration)

  1. English courses (see below): 36 credit hours
  2. (No more than 12 credits at the 200 level)
    • ENG-L202 Literary Interpretation 3 cr.
    • ENG-L371 Critical Practices 3 cr.
    • ENG-L495 Senior Seminar 3 cr.
      • Category 1: Beginnings through 18th Century (see list below) 3 cr.
      • Category 2: 19th Century (see list below) 3 cr.
      • Category 3: 20th-21st Century (see list below) 3 cr.
      • Category 4: World/Gender/Multicultural (see list below) 3 cr.
    • Electives (200-level and above from all English courses with prefixes L, W, G, or E) 15 cr.
    • TOTAL: 31 cr.

    • Beginnings through 18th Century: ENG-E301, E302, L297, L298, L308, L313, L314, L315, L320, L327, L347, L350
    • Nineteenth Century: ENG-E303, L299, L331, L332, L333, L335, L348, L351, L352, L355, L356
    • 20th-21st Century: ENG-E304, L299, L345, L346, L348, L354, L357, L358, L366, L380, L381
    • World/Gender/Multicultural: ENG-L225, L370, L378, L379, L406, A303, CLAS-C205 (Mythology)
    • Variable topics courses such as ENG-L369, L381, L383, L431, L450, and L460 may satisfy a category requirement depending upon the topic of the course. See an advisor for approval.
    • ENG-L202 must be taken before ENG-L371. Students are encouraged to take a 100- or 200-level course before attempting courses at the 300- level or above. A course may not count in more than one category. Students may substitute one 300-level or above course in the major from a related field approved by a departmental advisor (e.g., literature in another language, new media communication, history, film studies, African American studies, women's studies, folklore, philosophy).

B. A. in English (Pre-Law Concentration)

  11. No more than 12 cr. within the courses above may be at the 200 level.
Required Courses Outside of English

Students must also take four required courses that also meet campus general education requirements: 

  1. POLS-Y215 (3 cr.)
  2. One 300+-level history course (3 cr.)
  3. One 300+-level philosophy course (3 cr.)
  4. SPCH-S228, C321, or C325 (3 cr.)

One of the courses within English electives may be from an outside approved discipline. All other A&S and English major requirements apply for this concentration.

B. A. in English (Writing, Editing, and Media Concentration)

  9. Writing electives (any ENG-W courses plus approved writing courses from journalism or new media communication)--9 cr.
  10. ENG-W398 or W498 Internship (3 cr.)

Students may take no more than 12 credits at the 200 level from the courses above.

Required Courses Outside of English

Students must also take two courses from other areas that might also meet campus general education requirements. These would be any digital media, communication arts, or journalism electives approved by faculty--6 cr.
