Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry

At Indiana University Kokomo, the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Chemistry centers on a traditional core that includes organic, analytical, inorganic, physical chemistry, biochemistry and mathematics. Good scientists also need to be exposed to other fields of knowledge—to the arts, social sciences, and humanities. That's why our chemistry curriculum also includes course requirements in subject areas such as history, English, sociology, psychology, foreign languages, mathematics, and information sciences. Three different concentrations are offered.

General Chemistry Concentration

The general chemistry concentration includes required and elective courses in analytical, organic, physical, biology, and inorganic chemistry. Students also have the option of working on a research project. This broad curriculum prepares students to work as chemists for a variety of industries. It also prepares students for graduate studies.

Chemical Biology Concentration

The chemical biology concentration allows students to take fundamental classes in biology and chemistry and to learn how to use chemical tools to solve biological problems. This concentration can also be used as a pre-med program. Students will be well prepared to address challenges in pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries.

Environmental Chemistry and Sustainability Concentration

The environmental chemistry and sustainability concentration is interdisciplinary and will prepare students to understand the fate of chemicals in natural environments as well as applications in green chemistry to reduce pollution. Students will be ready to work in a variety of scientific jobs in the area of environmental science and sustainability.

The B.A. in Chemistry can lead to a variety of careers. The occupational areas listed below represent only a few of many career possibilities open to chemistry graduates:

  • Foods and Nutrition
  • Mineralogy
  • Polymers
  • Biochemicals
  • Nuclear power
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Forensic Analysis
  • Petroleum Industry

In addition to the extensive laboratory and classroom experiences offered through the chemistry program, research opportunities are also available through IU Kokomo's Undergraduate Research Summer Institute (URSI). Chemistry majors may also engage in individual study, which involves selecting a research area of interest, developing that research, and then presenting their findings both in writing and in an oral presentation. You can earn up to 12 elective credit hours through independent study. A research experience is highly encouraged for those students who want to attend a medical school. It is also highly desirable for students considering graduate studies.
