Lt. Governor Skillman Joins 14-County North Central Indiana Regional Leadership Institute at IUPUI

I make it a point to get on the road and spend time with Hoosiers from as many different communities as possible. So I was especially excited to be able to greet representatives from 14 different counties on the campus of IUPUI when the North Central Indiana Regional Leadership Institute met last week.

The conference room was filled with leaders from all across the north central region of the state. They had good questions and good ideas, and I was pleased to bring them an update from the Statehouse and my perspective on Indiana's economy. We are living through difficult and uncertain economic times, but Indiana continues to be one of only a handful of states that is holding its own. Time will tell how long that holds true, but there is a lot we can do to strengthen our position. Another honestly balanced budget is just a start.

The legislature failed to pass an honestly balanced budget, so we are now facing a special session. The Governor and I will introduce a budget that ensures the state will continue to be good stewards of the taxpayers' money. While federal stimulus dollars are heading our way, we cannot use them to pad the state's budget. Thankfully, we are in a place to use the stimulus as a genuine boost to job creation, not to fill gaps in the basic services state government provides.

Despite the challenges, if we can hold to a tight, efficient budget and an open, friendly environment for business I believe Indiana's future will be strong and prosperous. Thanks to the leaders at the Indiana Regional Leadership Institute, we already have a network of dedicated entrepreneurs and community leaders who have what it takes to keep us moving forward. I am looking forward to the future, and especially to the good things local leaders will do in north central Indiana.
