Exercise and Sport Science Concentration

What is exercise and sport science?

Exercise and sport science focuses on the study of human movement from developmental, mechanical, motor control, psychosocial, psychological, and physiological perspectives. Students study the human body and how it functions in a variety of settings. They research nutrition and exercise, physical conditioning and performance, sport performance (including developing talent and mental performance), as well as injury prevention and recovery. The program is appropriate for students who plan to attend graduate school, work in the fitness and exercise industry, or any other field where human movement and exercise prescription is the focus.

Students considering any aspect of health involving exercise, nutrition, and/or sport should find the concentration of Exercise and Sport Science interesting and rewarding.  This concentration can serve as a pathway for careers in exercise and sport that requires a baccalaureate degree.  It also is an undergraduate gateway for many pre-professionals occupations including physical or occupational therapist, athletic trainer, physician's assistant, and other types of health professions.  This concentration is also applicable for post-baccalaureate studies in areas such as human growth, aging, biomechanics, exercise physiology, health promotion, motor control, or sport psychology. Supporting courses from biology, chemistry, computer science, psychology, health education, and physics may also be included to provide a more in-depth analysis of principles associated with human structure and function.
