On behalf of the faculty, staff and students, welcome to the Division of Education at Indiana University Kokomo. We invite you to learn about our mission and commitment to excellence by exploring our Web site, where you will find information about our teacher education programs and professional education initiatives, partnerships, and activities. We are proud of our strong undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare our graduates to meet the diverse learning needs of all students. You will find, however, the greatest strength of the Division of Education is our people. It is my honor to serve as Interim Dean of Education and represent such an incredible group of dedicated and caring faculty, staff, students, and alumni. We hope you will become part of our family as well.
Patricia A. Swails , Ph.D.
Interim Dean of Education

Mission
The
Division of Education at Indiana University Kokomo serves an
eleven-county area in north central Indiana, which includes Carroll,
Cass, Clinton, Fulton, Grant, Hamilton, Howard, Madison, Miami,
Tipton, and Wabash Counties. The mission of the
Division of Education at Indiana University Kokomo is to prepare
successful teachers for the classroom who must master both a body of
content knowledge and effective teaching skills. As a result, our
teacher education programs offer a balance of broad liberal arts
education and specialized knowledge in professional education and
concentrated areas. The Indiana University Kokomo Teacher Education
Programs are based on the Professional Educator Model, which was
created and designed using standards from the National Council for
Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the Interstate New
Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC), the Indiana
Department of Education Office of Educator Licensing and Development (formerly
the Indiana Professional Standards Board, IPSB), and other current
teacher education literature including best practices, in the belief
that the prospective teacher education candidate develops, over
time, from a novice to a skilled educator. The successful teacher,
therefore, must master both a body of content knowledge and
effective teaching skills.
The purpose of our
Teacher Education Programs is threefold:
1) to prepare students
to serve as effective teachers and members of the profession;
2) to assist students in
meeting Indiana licensure requirements for public school personnel;
and
3) to assist Indiana
University graduates in securing satisfying professional positions.
Conceptual Framework
The Professional Educator Model for the initial teacher
education programs in the Division of Education at IU Kokomo is
conceptually based on the Deweyan view that the aim of education is
human development. In his succinct essay written in 1934 and
entitled “The Need for a Philosophy of Education,” he declared the
purpose of education to be development. He stated:
What
then is education when we find actual satisfactory specimens of
it in existence? In the first place, it is a process of
development of growth and it is the process, and not merely the
result that is important…an educated person is the person who
has the power to go and get more education.
The Division's initial
programs of study are based on the premise that teachers develop
over time through knowledge gained in coursework, experiences
presented in the practicum and interactions with professionals in
the field. They steadily move to understand the interaction of
theory and practice.
Standards of Excellence
In order to ensure consistent levels of
preparation across all of our teacher education programs and to
measure the professional growth of our teacher candidates, the
Division of Education monitors our candidates’ achievement of our metastandards at key benchmarks in our programs
of study.
As a result, our graduates of our initial
programs of study demonstrate
proficiency in seven professional education metastandards:
» Child Development and Learning
»
Diversity
» Curriculum and Content Knowledge
» Instruction
»
Assessment
»
Professionalism and Learning Communities
» Family and Community Involvement
Commitment to Excellence
The Division of Education plays a key role in
preparing and educating teaching
professionals in our region. Our highly qualified faculty and staff
are committed to our teacher candidates' preparation and
performance, as well as to P-12 student learning in our region. This dedication and commitment to teaching and learning helps enable
our graduates to secure satisfying professional positions and enjoy
rewarding careers in the classroom. Individuals who successfully
complete one of our Teacher Education Programs and state mandated
tests are eligible to apply for the appropriate license. In
addition, Indiana
has a reciprocal agreement with approximately forty other
states.
As part of our commitment to excellence, the Division of
Education is also involved in a number of partnerships with area
schools, communities, and businesses. Examples of these teaching and
learning partnerships include the following:
» VISION (Vision of
Industry and Schools In Ongoing Networks) - a
Teacher/Curriculum Enhancement Course and Partnership initiated by
the Delphi Electronics & Safety and Kokomo-Center Schools (DEKCS)
Business/Education partnership and introduced to the community in
1994, which has grown into a unique, total community partnership
between twelve businesses, the five Howard County school
corporations, two Miami County and one Tipton County school
corporations, as well as Indiana University-Kokomo (IU Kokomo) and
Ivy Tech.
» Center for Early Childhood Education - established on
campus as a result a $1.5 million Community Alliances to Promote
Education (CAPE) grant from the Lilly Endowment awarded to Indiana
University Kokomo and the Community Foundation of Howard County.
Programs of Study
We offer a number of degree and licensing programs at IU Kokomo,
to include three baccalaureate degree programs: the Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education; a newly implemented Bachelor of Science Degree in Early
Childhood Education; and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education, which is currently being reviewed by the ICHE and is scheduled for implementation in the Fall Semester of 2007. In addition, the ICHE is currently
reviewing the Division's proposal for a new Master of Science Degree in Education, which is also scheduled for implementation in the Fall Semester of 2007. As you can see, it is an exciting chapter in the history of the
Division of Education at Indiana University Kokomo that is currently being written, and we hope that you will join us
and be a part of that story as we move forward
into the twenty-first century.
