Majors & Programs

Biology

Students interested in the science of life and living organisms can earn a Bachelor of Arts in Biology degree at IU Kokomo. Majors in this area study cell biology, genetics, morphology, physiology, plant science, microbiology, and immunology, as well as general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics. In addition, students take a range of courses in the arts, social sciences, and humanities, including history, English, sociology, psychology, foreign languages, mathematics, and information sciences.

Students planning to go to graduate school after earning a bachelor's degree in biology may be interested in the preprofessional tracks in biology, premedicine, or predentistry. Graduates who have followed these tracks have been accepted into advanced programs in medical, dental, optometry, veterinary medicine, and chiropractic schools throughout the country.

For future science educators, IU Kokomo offers a program that makes it possible to earn a biology degree while becoming certified to teach biology at the secondary school level. The certification program requires 32 credit hours of methods and professional education curriculum, which are taken through the Division of Education.

In addition to the extensive laboratory and classroom experiences offered through the biology program, internship opportunities also are available through IU Kokomo's Undergraduate Research Summer Institute (URSI). Biology majors can earn credit for independent study, which involves conducting research and reporting on their findings. IU Kokomo students have assisted with research in aquatic physiology, ecological physiology, ecology, microbiology, electrochemistry, and laser physics.
