Biological and Physical Sciences
The Bachelor of Arts degree in biological and physical sciences is a broad-based science program centered around a traditional core of courses in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and natural sciences. Courses offered in biological and physical sciences include anatomy, astronomy, biology, botany, chemistry, earth science, environmental conservation, genetics, geology, human physiology, immunology, microbiology, physical geography, physics, and zoology.
The program is designed to enable students to tailor their studies to specific career goals. For example, a student interested in a career in psychiatry would want to take courses in anatomy, biology, physics, and chemistry, as well as sociology, psychology, and communications, and then apply to medical school.
Students planning to enter graduate school after earning a B.A. degree may want to pursue IU Kokomo's preprofessional tracks in biology, premedicine, and predentistry. Graduates who have followed these tracks have been accepted into advanced programs in medical, dental, optometry, and chiropractic schools throughout the country. The degree program also offers tracks in pre-Doctor of Physical Therapy and pre-Master of Occupational Therapy, which allow students to fulfill all prerequisites for these professional programs while earning a bachelor's degree.
In addition to the extensive laboratory and classroom experiences offered through the biology program, internship opportunities are available through IU Kokomo's Undergraduate Research Summer Institute (URSI). Biological and physical science majors may earn up to 12 credit hours in independent study, which involves conducting research and reporting their findings. IU Kokomo students have assisted with research in aquatic physiology, ecological physiology, ecology, microbiology, electrochemistry, and laser physics.
Careers
Graduates with a degree in biological and physical sciences have career possibilities that range from health professions to positions with environmental agencies and pharmaceutical firms, as well as in education, agriculture, and industry. Students are also prepared to pursue graduate study in the sciences or medicine and other health-related fields.
