Computer Information Systems

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems is a four-year undergraduate program that involves the study of computers and their applications. The computer core classes ensure that students gain a broad understanding of computer information systems. Students in this major also select a minor, choosing from areas such as business, communication arts, and behavioral sciences. For example, with a business minor in computer information systems, students gain a broad understanding of business operations, management, and record keeping, in addition to building a solid technical education in computers, systems design, and development.

For graduates who have completed a bachelor's degree, IU Kokomo offers a postbaccalaureate certificate program in information science to enhance opportunities for professional advancement. The program, which requires a minimum of 30 credit hours, provides a foundation of knowledge in computer information systems and data processing for people who need computer-based solutions in the field.

The following are some of the course topics offered in computer information systems: Introduction to Computers, Multimedia, COBOL, Object-Oriented Programming in C++/Java, Computer Hardware, System Software and Architecture, Database Systems, Information Systems Design, Data Processing Management, and Current Directions in Computer Information Systems. In addition, students participate in an internship in professional practice.

The Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Computer Information Systems is designed for students who have an undergraduate degree in a field other than computer information systems and who wish to earn a credential in this area. Students take a minimum of 30 credit hours in computer information systems courses.
