Majors & Programs

Mathematics

The Bachelor of Arts degree program in mathematics at IU Kokomo is centered in two broad categories: theoretical mathematics and applied mathematics. Theoretical mathematicians advance mathematical science by developing new principles and new relationships between existing mathematical principles. Applied mathematicians use mathematics to develop theories and techniques to solve practical problems in business, industry, government, engineering, and the natural and social sciences. Applied mathematicians use computers extensively to solve complex problems and to process large amounts of data.

Once students have selected either theoretical or applied math, they take a core of courses in their particular area of concentration. Required courses for both concentrations include Calculus I and II and Linear Algebra for Undergraduates.

Many math majors also choose to minor in another field to increase their career flexibility and enhance their marketability with prospective employers. Popular minors for math majors include computer information systems, business, education, and psychology. Students can also earn certification to teach mathematics at the high school, junior high, and middle school levels by taking an additional 32 credit hours in methods and professional education. This certification curriculum is offered through IU Kokomo's Division of Education.

After completing their degree requirements, math majors take a written examination covering the entire undergraduate mathematics program. Success on this exam, coupled with an IU degree, provides evidence of strong preparation in the field of mathematics to prospective employers.

Careers

Graduates with a degree in mathematics work in a broad range of areas, including actuarial positions, statistical analysis, education, and financial forecasting. Students can also earn teacher certification to teach at the high school, junior high, or middle school level.
