Psychology

As a science, psychology seeks to understand the basic principles by which living organisms adapt their behavior to their changing physical and social environments. The Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology provides a broad coverage of modern scientific psychology. Students in this major take a strong core of courses in the arts and sciences, as well as specific required psychology courses and psychology electives. Students can choose from courses such as Psychology of Personality, Behavioral Neuroscience, Cognitive Psychology, Psychology of Childhood and Adolescence, and Adult Development and Aging, among others.

Careers

Students who major in psychology may plan to pursue graduate work in psychology (in either applied or experimental areas) or in fields that emphasize scientific training and quantitative skills. Students who major in psychology may also work in human service fields such as crisis intervention, in social services, or in business areas such as human resources or management. They also may pursue graduate education in areas such as social work, marriage and family counseling, or vocational counseling.
