Indiana University Kokomo News :: Print this ArticleKokomo, Indiana – Two summer youth programs at Indiana University Kokomo will offer under-represented middle and high school students in Howard County the opportunity to explore a variety of professional fields, while gaining knowledge about what it takes to be a successful college student.
"The mission of this program is to inspire, incite enthusiasm, and connect with area minority students," said Christian Chauret, chairperson for the Department of Natural, Information and Mathematical Sciences.
There is no cost to attend. Please contact Chauret for more information at (765) 455-9371, or through e-mail at cchauret@iuk.edu.
The second phase of the initiative is the Summer Diversity program, "The Right Fit!", to take place on campus July 6 to 9, and July 12 to 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. each day. This will provide fundamental support for up to 30 high school students in their preparation for entrance into IU Kokomo's undergraduate degree programs.
"The Summer Diversity Program will provide experimental learning activities in the areas of nursing, education, business, and public and environmental affairs," said Masato Ogawa, assistant professor of education and director of the program.
Interested students for "The Right Fit!" must submit registration and recommendation forms to Ogawa. He can be contacted at (765) 455-9448, or by e-mail at mogawa@iuk.edu. There is no cost to attend.
This is the second year for these programs, which were approved by IU President Michael McRobbie. Both sessions fall in line with IU Kokomo's strategic plan that calls for the development and implementation of activities and programs designed to increase and enhance student diversity on campus. IU Kokomo's initiative is one of 12 diversity programs university-wide to receive funding.
Indiana University Kokomo serves a seven county, primary service area in north central Indiana. The campus offers more than 40 academic programs including four graduate degrees.
