Math Commons

The staff of the Math Commons works to provide appropriate instructional support for students enrolled in Foundation, General Education and Gateway Mathematics courses. Drop in tutoring and one-on-one tutoring appointments are provided at no cost to IU Kokomo students. Classes supported by the Math Commons staff are the following:

  • Strategies for Success in College Mathematics (SSCI-S100)
  • College Algebra (M104, M105)
  • Pre-calculus (M125/MA153)
  • Trigonometry (M126/MA154)
  • Finite Mathematics (M118)
  • Calculus (M119/MA221, M120/MA222, M215)
  • Statistics (M133, K310/STAT301)
  • Topics in mathematics (M134)

Math Computer Lab

As well as the services provided in the Math Commons (KO 050), students taking SSCI-S100, M104, or M105 may receive additional help across the hall in the Math Computer Lab (KO 054). The lab is equipped with 31 computers for students to do their online math homework in a quiet and focused environment. There is at least one tutor staffed in the Math Computer Lab for students to flag if they encounter a question. Although students taking college algebra have a weekly scheduled time to work in the lab, all SSCI-S100, M104 and M105 students are encouraged to drop into work anytime the lab is open.

Help Sessions for Finite Mathematics

To specifically support our finite students, we offer targeted help sessions on a walk-in basis with no appointment necessary. During the help sessions, students will be guided to the answers to their questions rather than have the problems solved for them. We ask that they come prepared with specific problems to discuss and solve. Students do not have to be there promptly at the start or attend for the entire time. Open sessions for fall and spring semesters are held in the Math Commons “Boardroom”, KO 050B and are offered when classes are in session, beginning the second week of the semester through the last week of classes. For Spring semester it is Mondays and Tuesdays 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. and Wednesdays and Thursdays 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
