INDIANA AUTHORS
My area of special interest is Indiana authors which has resulted in a collection of children's books demonstating the wide range of local expertise. From my research, I have offered during a summer session a three credit course for teachers. The design of the course is as follows:
Description of W505:
This course is designed for K-12 teachers to become aware of authors associated with the Indiana Golden Age of Literature and to understand their literary significance. Local authors and current Indiana authors of children’s literature will be reviewed. In addition, works of Indiana authors will serve as a springboard for interdisciplinary curriculum development. This course does include concentrated instruction and many field site visits during Summer Session II. In addition, teachers will design and implement a Hoosier Connection Project with their pupils during Fall Semester 2006 that meets Indiana State Standards. The grade for the course will not be posted until the Hoosier Connection Project is completed and documented.
Coursework included in IU Kokomo Division of Education's Advanced Teacher Preparation Programs focus upon the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required of highly qualified and accomplished practitioners. Specific proficiencies are referenced to National Board for Professional Teacher Standards (NBPTS) which guide IU Kokomo Division of Education advanced programs and coursework. Ten Themes/Candidate Proficiencies have been identified. Upon course completion, students would consider work(s) from this course as exhibits in their Teacher Portfolio. Each person completing successfully this class will address the following: Subject Knowledge, Curriculum, Pedagogy, Assessment, Inquiry, Reflection, and Field Practice. Depending upon the theme and presentation of the Hoosier Connection, it is possible one could address the themes of Collaboration, Diversity, and/or Technology.
