Academic Council Minutes

March 24, 2005

Present: Haffley, Green, Cass, Sciame-Giesecke, Pati, Roales, Ash, Calhoon, Stroman, Sehr, L. Henry, Aniskiewicz, Besel, Hakes, Bradley

  1. Bradley and Ash reported on the activities of ADP project and requested continuing support for the project. ICC has funds and can provide support for service learning activities.
  2. Green reported on the status of the CTE funds. On April 1, the Board of Trustees will receive our plan for the CTE funds. If the plan is approved, we will immediately begin expending the funds. Green indicated the amount and allocation of the funds over the next ten years.
  3. NCATE and IPSB will be on campus to review the Education programs on April 10, 11, & 12. L. Henry distributed and discussed the NCATE standards and the recommendations of the last team visit in 2002.
  4. VC Green reviewed the IU policy on hospitality funds expended from the operating or 05 budget. VC Yost is currently developing a budget for 2005-2006 that will propose to spend approximately the same amount of money on hospitality in 05-06 as expended this year and that plans to distribute hospitality funds to the individual unit budgets.
  5. After much discussion, it was agreed that IU Kokomo should consider establishing a 2+2 agreement with IVY Tech with a maximum of 60 credit hours transferred to IU Kokomo degrees from IVY Tech associate degree graduates.
  6. The following were observed in a discussion on Academic Academies in secondary schools:
    • Most high schools have established career academies which provide a focus for studies relevant to various careers.
    • These programs often can dual college/high school credit.
    • What can IU Kokomo do to connect with these students? Each dean will prepare a list of afternoon classes which could be available for these high school students. Deans will also contact these career centers to see how we can cooperate with them to provide educational opportunities for their students.
  7. VC Green reported that the Indiana University Student Code of Ethics is in the process of being modified. The new code will only deal with policies. Each campus must develop procedures to implement the policies.
  8. VC Green reported that the newly designed website for IU Kokomo has a July 1 start. This means that we have a lot of work in June to do to move the information into the new design.
  9. Budget -NO NEW MONEY EXPECTED. Nonetheless, we must identify any new budget items that must be supported and also identify the top two or three budget concerns. Each dean will have 15 to 20 minutes to make these presentations.
