Academic Council Minutes

July 16, 2004

Present: Haffley, Green, Cass, L. Henry, Stroman, Sciame-Giesecke, Calhoon, Stachacz, Pati, Kintzele, Roales
Guest: Hawkins

  1. An information commons will begin in the Library in August. It will start with 24 computers.
  2. CTE funds have been committed for Student Activities/development/service learning projects. Amy Sadler has been hired and funding for internships for not-for-profit organizations will allow six internships per semester to be granted next year. Sarah Hawkins described the program and asked the Academic Council members to explain the program to faculty and encourage them to encourage student participation. She asked the criteria for granting credit for internships be sent to Julie Diesman. The non-profit agencies will select the students from the list of applicants. The job descriptions supplied by the non-profit agencies will be sent to the deans/chairpersons so they can evaluate whether any college credit will be granted for the internship. This will be done in advance so the students will know whether college credit will be available before they apply. The deans/chairpersons will also provide a list of learning outcomes. We will discuss the progress of the program sometime next January.
  3. V.C. Green encouraged the deans/chairpersons to nominate faculty for distinguished teaching awards and also to identify possible FACET nominees. The nominations are due by October 15, 2004.
  4. We began the process of identifying goals for Academic Council by listing unit goals. We then suggested some common goals which we all support. The list will be refined and strategies for achieving these goals will be developed at future meetings.
