ACADEMIC COUNCIL MINUTES

October 27,2005

Present:  Stachacz, Roales, Calhoon, Hakes, Dibie, Kintzele, Aniskiewicz,  Stroman, Cass, Ash, Pati, Green

Announcements:

Green announced that the B.S. in Early Childhood Education is going to the Board of Trustees on November 4.  He expects it to be approved and hopes to move it on to the ICHE.  He hopes to see the Masters in Public Management go to the Board in April and then move on to the ICHE.  There is discussion in SPEA of a university-wide MPM.  Also on the table for further discussion and development is a revised BS degree in Secondary Education.  CTE funds and new enrollments will be the primary source of funds for these programs.

We have a university wide Informatics program.  South Bend has implemented their program as they are funded.  We are working with the IU South Bend faculty and administrators in their program and developing plans that would allow Kokomo to implement this program fall of 2006 at the earliest and no later than fall 2007.  In order to have a successful program, we will need to invest in development of current and new faculty.

Phase II of Library Commons is still in play.  Resources have been set aside and the next activity will be remodeling of CARS and Bibliographic- Instruction rooms.  Phase III discussions will consider moving CTLA and LEC to the Library.  Would like to have Phase II complete before fall 2006.

Saturday Orientations:  (Gerry Stroman) The New Student Orientation Task Force reviewed orientation, recommending greater engagement of students and their parents.  The TF suggested three Saturday orientations, but advisors only want two.  If parents are engaged, students may also be.  We will try a second Saturday and see how it works.  More resources will be required if more parents attend.  Any increased cost will have to be borne by the units.  Orientations will be Saturday May 6, Tuesday June 13, Saturday July 15, and August 8 & 10.  Orientation requires students to register at the same time.

Domestic Abuse:  (Aimee)  Take Back the Night will be held on April 25th.  There are defense workshops--service-learning is working on this issue.   Family Services are available for presentations.  Personal counseling is available through Student Services.
