IUK CALENDAR PRINCIPLES

Each semester shall contain fifteen weeks of instruction plus the final examination period.

The first day of classes shall be the fourth Monday in August for the first semester providing that the final examination period is completed by December 19.  The first day of classes for the second semester shall be the first Monday after the first Tuesday in January, providing that the date of commencement coordinates with commencement dates for other IU campuses.

IU Kokomo follows the University standard for the minimum instruction time for a three-credit class.  In all cases, the usual 3-credit lecture class meets for a minimum of approximately 2000 minutes, excluding the final examination period.  In most cases a 3-credit class will be scheduled for 2250 minutes plus the final examination period.  The minimum instruction time may include distance education techniques as well as class meetings.  Classes of varying lengths may be scheduled provided the minimum instruction time criterion is met.

Classes shall not meet on Labor Day and Martin L. King Jr. Day.

Thanksgiving recess shall be five days (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), and Spring recess shall be seven days (Sunday-Saturday) and will be the week following the ninth week of classes during the second semester.

The summer session shall be divided into two six and one half week sessions.  There shall be no classes on Memorial Day during the first Summer Session and no classes on the fourth of July during the second Summer Session.  Classes shall not meet on the preceding Friday when July fourth falls on a Saturday nor on the following Monday when July fourth falls on a Sunday.

The Faculty Senate shall approve the specific calendar for each academic year.
