Dear IUK Faculty Member,

Many instructors have chosen to group class assignments, readings, course calendars, and other materials into shrink-wrapped course packs to be sold in the Bookstore. Copyrighted materials are sometimes included in these course packs. Examples of copyrighted materials include: Text chapters, magazine articles, pictures, articles from academic journals, and other resources. Permission from the author who holds the copyright must be obtained to reprint these materials. The Bookstore must have a copy of the permission letter on file before we can reproduce the course packs and sell them to students. When putting together your course pack, identify what material is copyrighted, and request a “Copyright Clearance Center Request Form” from IUK Bookstore text buyer Lien Koztecki at lkozteck@iuk.edu. The completed form must be submitted to the Bookstore along with the materials to be copied. The Bookstore will request copyright clearance from the publisher before printing course packs. Permission is granted per semester, and will have to be renewed each semester the material is used. If copyright permission is denied, you will be notified. In 2002 the Bookstore sent a copy of a booklet entitled “Questions & Answers on Copyright for the Campus Community” to each IUK academic department. This booklet contains valuable information on copyright, “fair use,” copyright court cases, and software copyright information. Ask your department secretary if you would like to peruse it. If you would like to have a personal copy, please email me mlane@iuk.edu. Please remember to begin early in the adoption process to identify all copyright materials so that permissions can be obtained in a timely manner. Course pack materials are due into the Bookstore at the same time as textbook requirements. Your department chair or secretary will advise you of the deadlines.
