Degree Checklist

Requirements

  • Completion of 33 hours of graduate coursework
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for graduation.  If a student drops below a 3.0 GPA in any given semester, they could be dismissed from the program.
  • Only courses with a minimum grade of “B-“ will count towards the degree

Coursework

  • Six hours in two of the three departments (NIMS, SBSC, HUM)
  • Nine hours in three required seminars (D501, D502, D503)
  • Three hours of Introduction to Graduate Liberal Studies
  • Three hours of electives
  • Six hours of thesis work or a capstone project or 12 graduate hours in lieu of the thesis work or capstone project, 6 hours replacing the thesis/capstone, plus an additional 6 hours of coursework.  The work will be assessed by a portfolio.

Thesis/Project

  • Select a committee chair and 2-3 committee members
  • Meet with the chair to decide on a mutually acceptable thesis topic or project
  • Meet with your committee to seek approval of the thesis or project
  • Fill out the thesis or project approval form and submit to the Dean of Arts and Sciences
  • Upon completion of the thesis or project, set a date for public presentation

Oral Examination

  • Upon completion of all requirements, each candidate must pass an oral examination based on the approved thesis or project.  If the candidate chose the additional coursework option, an examination will be designed from the courses in the two departments considered to be primary to the candidate’s program of study.
  • The oral exam will include a question from each member of the candidate’s committee. 

Portfolio

  • Each candidate will present a portfolio of their cumulative work.  The portfolio will include a paper from each course taken in their plan of study and a reflective essay.
  • The reflective essay will include a summary and reflection of each course taken in the candidate’s plan of study, integrating them together.
  • Each candidate will present their portfolio to their committee outlining the key learning outcomes.
