Message from the Dean

August 25, 2007

I am pleased to welcome you to the site of the School of Business. I am glad that you are here to learn about the distinctive features of this School.

You may know, our school holds accreditation on both undergraduate and master's levels by AACSB International—Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. We are proud to maintain our status among the 15 percent of business schools worldwide that hold this coveted accreditation. This accreditation endorses our commitment of quality to our students and their prospective employers, and our resolve to continuously engage in never-ending improvements. Our appearance continuously from 2006 to 2008 in The Best Business Schools from the Princeton Review also attests to the quality of our program.

As a step in that direction, our School has developed a new mission statement and a core value statement, working in tandem with our major stakeholders.  The school’s mission is to provide high quality Indiana University education for the residents and employers of north central Indiana. The school’s focus is “to prepare students for effective and ethical leadership in an evolving global economy.  To this end, our faculty is committed to excellence in teaching and continued intellectual growth through applied research, professional development, and service.”

Our undergraduate and graduate business programs hold the distinctive touch of a community of dedicated faculty and professional staff. We offer an array of programs that are not only rigorous and integrative but also are innovative and contemporary. We foster a rich learning environment by maintaining a low student-to-faculty ratio, which in turn paves the way for personal and individualized attention. About 90 percent of our faculty holds terminal degrees (Ph.D., D.B.A., J. D.) from leading universities. A majority of our faculty members have years of business experience to back their educational preparation. We don’t use teaching assistants and in very rare cases use only highly experienced and accomplished adjunct instructors and peer tutors. Thus, I am proud to say that you will get the best education in a nurturing and caring environment that puts the “students first.”

We have integrated the newest digital technology into our curricula and the classrooms are technologically up-to-date to enable our instructors to explore a plethora of pedagogical possibilities. We were admitted to SAP Education Alliance in July 2002.  This partnership is enabling us to integrate modern technologies into our rich curriculum.

To enhance learning, the School of Business faculty employs a variety of teaching methods, including case analyses, individual and group projects, simulations, classroom discussions, guest lectures, and active learning modules. The school encourages diversity in all its manifestation—gender, age, race, background, interest, nationality, etc.  We are putting our best efforts to make “quality” education of Indiana University “affordable” in north central Indiana.

The following testimony holds aloft our resolve to be the “destination business school in north central Indiana.”

  • Our senior students show strong performance on the National ETS Major Field Tests - often with scores at or above the 90th percentile. Our M.B.A. students also show exemplary performance.
  • Our Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team won championship honors at regional expositions for the 2001-2006 period and proceeded to win the second runner-up honor at the National Semi-final competition in 2002 and 2005.
  • Our student investment teams have scored top state finishes in the Collegiate Investment Challenge for five consecutive years.
  • Our faculty members have consistently won coveted awards on the campus, state, and professional levels, including a Fullbright fellowship .
  • Two of our School of Business faculty members have the distinct honor of winning the state’s highest honor: the Sagamore of the Wabash award, and one Distinguished Hoosier Award.
  • One of our faculty emeritus was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree by Indiana University .

I have sampled a few of our achievements that put us in the international limelight. In November/December 2003, AACSB International spotlighted our achievements in its flagship magazine BizEd

I invite you to be a part of this learning environment if you are in the search of a quality education that will take you far. If you are an alumni or a benevolent friend of this school, I would invite you to show your generosity by contributing to make the school the very best it can be.  My promise is that the School of Business will open its door every academic year with the note that the “best is yet to come.”

Thanks for e-visiting the School of Business.  I hope to welcome you to the campus in the near future. Please contact me by e-mail at npati@iuk.edu or contact my office at (765) 455-9275 if I can be of further help.
