Degrees in General Studies

Overview of the General Studies Degree

  • Are you a person who started college but dropped out to take a job, serve in the military, or raise a family?
  • Have you always wanted to go to college but never had enough free time to enroll?
  • Do you live a long distance from a traditional campus so that commuting daily to a university is not a practical choice?

If your answer to any of these questions is "yes," Indiana University Kokomo's General Studies Program is the answer to your search for a convenient, flexible way to earn the college degree you've always wanted.

The General Studies Degree Program is...

  • A broadly based education that encompasses the arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and mathematics and natural sciences.
  • An opportunity to pursue a college education. We'll help you balance your course load along with your work schedules, domestic responsibilities, or logistical problems.
  • A degree that establishes the foundation for a lifetime of learning.

You can choose to earn either an associate or a bachelor's degree in general studies.

Students pursue the associate of arts degree to achieve personal and professional goals, including career advancement, self-enrichment, expanded employment options, military advancement, and as a stepping-stone for advanced studies. Upon completion of the Associate of Arts in General Studies degree, many students apply to complete the Bachelor of General Studies degree.

The bachelor's degree provides the interdisciplinary preparation for many careers and graduate programs. Graduates are employed in a variety of fields, including education, law, government service, social service, real estate, private industry, and nonprofit organizations. Many students have advanced from completion of the Bachelor of General Studies degree to graduate programs in anthropology, business, divinity studies, education, fine arts, international affairs, law, library science, management, nursing, public health, and social work. General studies alumni have earned master's degrees and doctorates at Indiana University and other universities.
