Degrees in General Studies
Earning Credits for General Studies
Many students have previously earned academic credit at Indiana University or at other institutions. Some students may be eligible for credit by examination or for the award of credit for college-level learning gained through life experience (SAC, or Self-Acquired Competency). Previously earned credits are applied to the degree requirements of the associate and bachelor’s degrees according to the following guidelines.
Earning Credit for an Associate of Arts in General Studies Degree
Indiana University Credits
For the associate degree, a maximum of 50 credit hours previously earned at IU can be applied to the degree. Courses in which grades of D+, D, or D- were earned may be used as elective credit only.
Credit from Other Institutions
Regardless of the number of credit hours students have earned at other regionally accredited colleges or universities, a maximum of 45 hours can be applied to the associate degree.
Credit by Examination from Other Institutions
Students wishing to transfer credit earned from other institutions on the basis of credit by examination must have satisfactorily completed sequential courses in that subject area prior to transfer.
Military Credit
Students who have served in the military may be eligible for credits they earned while in the military. A copy of the student's DD214 will be required and other documentation may also be required.
Earning Credit for the Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies
Indiana University Credits
For the bachelor’s degree, a maximum of 100 credit hours previously earned at IU can be applied to the degree. Courses in which grades of D+, D, or D- were earned may be used as elective credit only.
Credit from Other Institutions
Regardless of the number of credit hours students have earned at other regionally accredited colleges or universities, a maximum of 90 hours can be applied to the bachelor’s degree.
Credit by Examination from Other Institutions
Students wishing to transfer credit earned from other institutions on the basis of credit by examination must have satisfactorily completed sequential courses in that subject area prior to transfer.
Military Credit
Students who have served in the military may be eligible for credits they earned while in the military. A copy of the student's DD214 will be required and other documentation may also be required.
