Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts

The Bachelor of Arts degree in fine arts is grounded in a traditional art curriculum with courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, design, and printmaking, but it also includes interdisciplinary options in informatics and new media. The curriculum also includes courses in graphic art and new media art including video and animation. Students enrolled in the program will have the option to tailor their coursework to their varied interests.

Careers

Graduates with degrees in Fine Arts often pursue careers allowing them to use their creative skills in museums, galleries, art centers, and design firms. Students are also prepared for graduate study in fine art.

 

Course Requirements 

Arts and Sciences General Education Core

Information Literacy (Communication Skills)--10 hrs.

Cultural Literacy (Foreign Language)--6 hrs. at the 2nd year level

Math--3 hrs.

Humanities--9 hrs.

Biological and Physical Sciences--13 hrs.

Social Sciences--15 hrs.

 

The Fine Arts degree concentration (44 credit hours)

12 hours of Art History (no more than 6 hours at the 100 level)

9 hours of fundamental studio courses at the 100 level

21 hours of studio courses at the 200 level or above (no more than 6 hrs. at the 200 level)

A senior capstone experience (FINA-S400--2 cr. hrs.)

The Senior Capstone Experience in Fine Arts

The purpose of the senior capstone experience is to provide students with opportunities to demonstrate that they have mastered a depth of knowledge in the major, that they can integrate knowledge within their creative endeavors, and that they are able to communicate coherently.

The capstone experience is made up of the following:

• An individual exhibition of the student’s representative work reflecting the program goals.
• A written statement about the student’s exhibit, goals, techniques, process approach and influences, and course for future direction. 

 

Minor in Creative Arts--Visual Art

The minor is an excellent choice for students wishing to develop a strong understanding of the visual arts so they can apply them to their chosen field. The minor consists of 19 credit hours.

Visual Arts Concentration (7 core cr.)

              FINA-S400       Independent Studio Projects (1 cr.)

              FINA-F101        Fundamental Studio 3-D or Fundamental Studio 2-D (3 cr.)

              FINA-F100        Fundamental Studio Drawing (3 cr.)

Select 12 hours from studio art courses at the 200-level or above in the following areas:
Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Graphic Art, and New Media Art including Animation and Video. Three hours in Art History can be substituted for 3 studio art hours.
