The purpose of interlibrary loan is to obtain materials needed primarily for research or academic purposes which are not available in the local library. Interlibrary loan services operate within the National Interlibrary Loan Code, national copyright laws, as well as local library guidelines.
Indiana University Kokomo Library will only accept and process interlibrary loan requests for current faculty, staff, students, and emeritus faculty.
Residents of the State of Indiana are encouraged to contact their local public library for assistance with interlibrary loan requests.
Making a Request:
Before requesting any item through interlibrary loan, please check the online catalog, IUCAT, for the availability of the item at the IU Kokomo Library. For non-scholarly and genealogy materials, please check your local public library.
Request forms are available at the reference desk. Separate forms are used for book requests and for periodical article photocopy requests. In compliance with United States copyright laws, the form for periodical article photocopy requests must be signed. Please print the information on the forms using black ink. An incomplete form will cause a delay in receiving the requested materials. Please return the completed form to the librarian for review.
The IU Kokomo Library provides access to national and international sources of information. Library users may request materials available at other Indiana University libraries at no charge. At times a library user will identify a source which is not available within the Indiana University Libraries system. Undergraduate students should discuss these requests with a librarian to assist them in identifying locally owned materials. Only under special circumstances will interlibrary loan requests for items outside the Indiana University Libraries system be approved for undergraduate students. Depending on the availability and the cost, requests made by faculty and graduate students for materials outside the Indiana University Libraries system may be approved.
Status of Request:
Requests usually take 7 to 10 days to fill. This time period may vary and there is no guarantee that the materials will arrive on or before a needed date. Patrons will be notified of any change in the status of their interlibrary loan request, i.e. notification that the library is unable to fill the request. A request will be canceled on the materials not useful after date noted on the request form. Questions about the status of the request should be directed to the Interlibrary Loan Assistant at 455-9237.
Limits:
The following materials are not normally available through interlibrary loan:
- Titles owned by Indiana University Kokomo Library, if available for circulation.
- Rare, fragile, valuable or bulky materials.
- Materials with local circulation restrictions such as reference or reserve items.
- High-demand items such as best sellers and new books.
The Indiana University Kokomo Library reserves the right to refuse an interlibrary loan request if in its judgment; fulfillment of the request would involve a violation of the copyright law.
Notification:
When requested materials become available the library user will be notified by phone or e-mail at the numbers or address that they provided on the initial request form. If the library user cannot be contacted by phone or e-mail, notification will be made by mail.
Materials and articles (that are received by the Library as photocopies) will need to be picked up at the circulation desk.
Articles that are received by the Library electronically will be forwarded to the library user via e-mail at the address provided on the initial request form.
Loan Period:
The length of time interlibrary loan materials may be borrowed is set by the lending library. The due date assigned by that library is indicated on the date due slip. Books from other IU campuses are normally loaned for one month. All interlibrary loan materials are subject to recall at any time by the lending library.
Renewals:
Renewals on interlibrary loan materials are determined by the lending library. Renewal requests must be made 3-4 days before the due date. This may be done at the Indiana University Kokomo Library circulation desk. Renewals can NOT be made via the IUCAT My Account feature or after the due date.
Assistance:
Please feel free to ask a librarian for assistance in making interlibrary loan requests. Librarians are on duty during most of the hours the library is open Monday through Thursday. Reference assistance is available by calling the Indiana University Kokomo Library Ask A Librarian (Reference) desk at 455-9521 or e-mailing Ask A Librarian.
