Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree program in Mathematics at IU Kokomo is centered in two broad categories: theoretical mathematics and applied mathematics. Theoretical mathematicians advance mathematical science by developing new principles and new relationships between existing mathematical principles. Applied mathematicians, on the other hand, use mathematics to develop theories and techniques to solve practical problems in business, industry, government, engineering, and the natural and social sciences. Applied mathematicians use computers extensively to solve complex problems and to process large amounts of data. Once you have selected between theoretical and applied math, you'll take a core of courses in your particular area of concentration. Required courses for both concentrations include Calculus I and II and Linear Algebra for Undergraduates. All math majors must earn a minimum of 120 credit hours to earn the B.A. degree - 31 credit hours in the major, 75 hours in general education courses (subjects such as English, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences, history, information systems, and foreign language); and the remainder in electives.

Many math majors also choose to minor in another field as a means of increasing their career flexibility and enhancing their marketability with prospective employers. Some of IU Kokomo's academic program areas that are most popular as minors for math majors are: information systems, business, education, and psychology. You may also earn certification to teach mathematics at the senior high, junior high, and middle school levels by taking an additional 32 credit hours in methods and professional education. This certification curriculum is offered through IU Kokomo's Division of Education.

Once you've completed your degree requirements, usually near the end of your senior year, you'll take a written examination covering your entire undergraduate mathematics program. Your success on this exam, coupled with an Indiana University degree, provide compelling evidence of your preparation and strong foundation of knowledge in the field of mathematics to employers.

Internship and Research Opportunities

In addition to the extensive laboratory and classroom experiences offered through the chemistry program, research opportunities are also available through IU Kokomo's Undergraduate Research Summer Institute (URSI). Chemistry majors may also engage in individual study, which involves selecting a research area of interest, developing that research, and then presenting their findings both in writing and in an oral presentation. You can earn up to 12 elective credit hours through independent study.

What Can I Do With a Mathematics Degree?

As a general rule, a college major does not prepare you for one specific job, but rather it enables you to develop skills and abilities that can be applied to a broad range of occupations. A degree in mathematics is no exception. Your skills and knowledge in business, communications, history, the natural sciences, and the social and behavioral sciences, combined with a strong foundation in mathematics, prepares you for career paths in many fields.

As you move toward your educational and professional goals, IU Kokomo's Office of Career Services, located in the Kelley Student Center, can assist you with aptitude and interest assessments and help you prepare for the job search and interview process. The careers and settings listed below represent a few of those available to those who earn a degree in mathematics:
