KOKOMO, Ind.—Adults considering starting or returning to college are invited to an open house and ice cream social at Indiana University Kokomo on Sunday, May 4, from 1–4 p.m. Alumni and staff representing all academic disciplines will be available in Alumni Hall of the Kelley Student Center to discuss class options. “The alumni at each table will talk about how they were able to get through their programs as adult students,” said open house coordinator Lori Collins. She is an academic advisor for IU Kokomo’s Division of Continuing Studies, sponsor of the event. A presentation on admission requirements for adult students will be offered at 2 p.m. in Room 221 of the Kelley Student Center, followed by a 2:30 p.m. session on financial aid. Financial Aid Counselor John Delaney said that, contrary to many prospective students’ beliefs, adult students often do qualify for student loans and other aid. “Federal Pell Grants are based on credit hours,” Delaney said. “If you qualify and are attending for at least 1 credit hour, you could receive a grant.” The open house will also offer information about the campus’ Little Learners Child Care Center, student activities and career services. Campus tours will be conducted on the half hour, and the campus bookstore and the art gallery will be open to browsers. Collins encourages prospective students to bring their families and enjoy free ice cream during the afternoon. “We want children to be able to see where their parents might be taking classes,” she said. Current General Studies student Debbie Lanning of Greentown will be at the open house, sharing her experience as a returning adult student. She had taken classes at IU Kokomo in the early 1970s, but then opted for full-time employment. That ended with a job layoff in September 2001. “I felt I had to finish my degree and get a new career in which I couldn’t get laid off any more,” she said. Lanning’s earlier credits were all accepted in the General Studies program, condensing her path to a bachelor’s degree and, she hopes, to law school. Lanning found that she had “a different attitude about going to college” as a working adult. “I had more organizational skills. If you want to succeed, the professors will help you.” Like Lanning, many adult students take just one or two classes per semester. IU Kokomo makes scheduling easier with ACCELerated Evening College courses. The newly redesigned program condenses the lessons of a traditional 15-week course into only 8 weeks. This fall, about half of IU Kokomo’s ACCELerated Evening College courses will reduce class time even further, by providing a portion of instruction online through IU’s Oncourse system.
