IU Kokomo SIFE team wins third regional title
April 17, 2003 | |||||
KOKOMO, Ind.—“Impressive,” “very effective,” and “imaginative” were just a few of the ways judges for the regional Students In Free Enterprise competition described the IU Kokomo SIFE team’s 2003 annual report. That summary of the 37 service and education projects completed over the past year earned a third consecutive regional title for IU Kokomo SIFE.
The team now advances to compete at the 2003 SIFE USA National Exposition May 11–13 in Kansas City, Mo. In 2002, the IU Kokomo SIFE team placed as first runner-up in its league at the national SIFE competition. SIFE encourages college business students to develop leadership, communication and team-building skills through community outreach projects that promote free enterprise. In 2002–2003, IU Kokomo’s 32 SIFE members developed marketing strategies for Kokomo businesses, provided training and support for entrepreneurs in Mexico and Tanzania, taught economics basics to area fifth graders, and mentored new SIFE teams at other universities. Eighteen SIFE teams from four-year colleges competed at the St. Louis regional. IU Kokomo students Brian R. Van Camp Jr. of Bunker Hill and Erin Brechbiel, Adam Lovelace and Laura Whitehurst of Kokomo presented the local team’s report, with audio-visual support from Brandi Reagle of Peru and Adam Wahl of Kokomo. SIFE advisor Kathy Parkison, Ph.D., said her students did “a good job of thinking on their feet,” when responding to judges’ questions. “They made a good point of how the international projects had changed them,” she said. “Most of our students have never been out of this country before.” Several judges praised the IU Kokomo SIFE team’s enthusiasm for their projects and the alliances the team built with area businesses, such as SBC and Delphi Delco Electronics Systems. One judge cited the Mini Model Economy lessons SIFE taught to fifth graders as “an exceptional program for kids, guiding them for the future.” Some 1,400 colleges and universities around the globe sponsor SIFE teams. One hundred and sixty regional finalist teams named at 22 competitions across the United States will present their projects at the national exposition.
