KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo’s University Theatre will present the dark comedy “Alasin . . . An Exploration of the Seven Deadly Sins” April 11–13 in Havens Auditorium.

The “Sins”—Sloth, Pride, Greed, Envy, Lust, Wrath and Gluttony—are players in this tongue-in-cheek look at modern culture, where super-sized Americans in their super-sized SUVs give in to road rage while preening in their vanity mirrors.

IU Kokomo alumna Betty-Joyce Symphony of Kokomo wrote the play, borrowing characters and situations from C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters, Dante’s Divine Comedy and Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. The play contains references to literature covering more than five centuries, according to Symphony. “It ranges from the poem Piers Plowman, written in the 14th century, to quotes from a professional wrestling Web site,” she said. Symphony is directing the show in coordination with Colin Black, director of the IU Kokomo University Theatre. Black also plays the role of Virgil.

The cast includes IU Kokomo students Kathyrn Widman as Alasin, Carri Luster as The Duchess, Derrick Krober as Pride, Jessie Dillard as the drunken Dormouse, Veronica McNutt as the Queen of Hearts, Tyrone Vantenhove as the March Hare, Patrick Nelson as The Caterpillar, Jonathon Rogers as the Knave and Jennifer Foster as a chorus member. All are from Kokomo, with the exception of Widman from Rochester, Rogers from Sweetser and Foster from Wabash.

Local actors rounding out the cast include Andrew Schmidt as The Herald, Leonard Pigg III as the Mad Hatter, Benjamin Chase as The King, John Surface as Humpty Dumpty and Mathew Cary as The Cook and Lydia Hughes-Wohlford as a chorus member.

“Alasin . . . An Exploration of the Seven Deadly Sins” runs Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 13, at 2 p.m. Admission is $5. To reserve tickets, call (765) 455-9248 weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
