KOKOMO, Ind.--Two hundred twenty-five high school students will put their math thinking caps on Saturday, April 26, at IU Kokomo, during local tests for the Indiana State High School Math Contest. Local coordinator, Associate Professor of Mathematics Robin Symonds, Ph. D., said more than 2,000 students will compete at 15 sites around the state, including all Indiana University and Purdue campuses. IU Kokomo has hosted the contest since 1982; several university faculty members will volunteer as test proctors. The Kokomo campus has the second largest number of registered participants for a site this year, Symonds said. Most local competitors will come from Howard County schools, although a few students from Tipton and Tri-Central high schools are also signed up. Students can compete in one of following areas: pre-algebra, algebra I, geometry, algebra II and “comprehensive math.” The last category encompasses all high school math courses except calculus. Top scorers in each test category will be recognized in a noon ceremony. The contest is sponsored by the Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
