Old Ben 5K draws big crowd

STORY MENTIONS COMPETITORS FROM BUNKER HILL, GREENTOWN, KOKOMO, LAFAYETTE, LOGANSPORT, LUCERNE, NOBLESVILLE, PERU, RUSSIAVILLE, SWAYZEE KOKOMO, Ind.—Close to 200 walkers and runners took part in the 18th annual Old Ben 5K, held March 22 at Highland Park in Kokomo. Proceeds from the event benefited the scholarship fund of the Indiana University Kokomo Alumni Association, which coordinated the 5K in association with Club Kokomo Roadrunners, the Kokomo Parks and Recreation Department and The Kokomo Tribune. Paid registrations were up from those of the 2002 race, according to Director of Alumni Relations Cathy Hightower. “The increase in participation means the Alumni Association should be able to offer double the amount of scholarship dollars to students next year,” she said. Dustin Rose of Swayzee completed the course in 16:43 minutes, earning the prize for top male runner overall. Gary Jewell of Kokomo ran a 17:37 minute race, to be named male master runner overall. Angela Minnefield of Noblesville was the top female runner, with a time of 21:17 minutes. Top female master runner honors went to Cassie Bauson of Kokomo, who ran the course in 25:22 minutes. Two Russiaville residents took top honors among Old Ben 5K walkers: Carol Aders, at 33:58 minutes, and Jerry Lambert, at 28:29 minutes. Top finishers by age groups included Female Runners—18 and under, Annina Gruber, Kokomo (21:49); 19–29, Diana Anderson, Kokomo (23:24); 30–39, Amy Piazza, Kokomo (24:10); 40–49, Nancy Anderson, Kokomo (26:01); 50–59, Sara Miller, Peru (25:55). Male Runners—18 and under, Kyle Walsh, Kokomo (17:08); 19–29, Ryan Woolever, Lafayette (18:55); 30–39, Scott Colford, Logansport (16:45); 40–49, Byron Bundrent, Kokomo (18:54); 50–59, John Sites, Peru (21:06); 60–69, Dale Sullivan, Logansport (23:58). Female Walkers—20–29, Amber Plaspohl, Lafayette (45:55); 30–39, Renee Berry, Kokomo (46:54); 40–49, Mary Miller, Bunker Hill (34:44); 50–59, Mona Grills, Kokomo (39:13); 60 and over, Julia Donahue, Kokomo (40:30). Male Walkers—20–29, Eric Queen, Kokomo (38:55); 30–39, Kirk McAninch, Russiaville (57:41); 40–49, Rick Spencer, Lucerne (33:52); 50–59, Tim Taflinger, Kokomo (33:52); 60 and over, Don Middleton, Greentown (57:38). Hightower praised the work of Alumni Association Secretary Phil Williams’s work in soliciting race sponsors and coordinating the activity. Other Alumni Association board members and the IU Kokomo Student Ambassadors helped out on the day of the race.
Additional event sponsors included Blondies Cookies Inc., Indiana Business Communications, Kroger, Liberty Financial Group, Momentum Inc., Palmer’s Jewelry, Solidarity Federal Credit Union and Young’s Water Conditioning.
