Community Foundation adds $10,000 to endowment fund

KOKOMO. Ind.—The Community Foundation of Howard County has approved a $10,000 grant to IU Kokomo, to help the campus establish a science equipment endowment fund. “Indiana University Kokomo is a vital resource to the community,” said foundation president Ron Harper, in announcing the grant. “The Community Foundation is pleased to be able to participate in this project.” The gift was one of eight grants made by the Community Foundation in its first grants cycle of 2004. “IU Kokomo is extremely grateful to the Community Foundation of Howard County for their confidence and support relating to our Kresge Science Initiative,” said Nancy Dailey, vice chancellor for external relations. “The Community Foundation grant will assist the campus in meeting Kresge’s expectation that we will raise $468,000 by December.” As of April 5, 2004, donors had pledged a total $220,639 to the endowment fund. The endowment is part of a total $935,000 project, which will purchase equipment to meet the current needs of science courses at IU Kokomo and establish an endowment for maintaining and replacing equipment in perpetuity. A Kresge Science Initiative challenge grant will provide an initial $117,000 for equipment in July. Kresge will contribute an additional $117,000 in July 2005 if private gifts for the remainder of the endowment are secured by December 2004. The foundation grant also demonstrates the Community Foundation board’s “understanding of the importance of the sciences for the future economic and intellectual development of the north central Indiana region,” Dailey added. “We are pleased to have the Community Foundation of Howard County as one of our partners in this important endeavor.” For further information, contact Nancy Dailey at (765) 455-9485.
