Lecturer examines U.S. role in Iraq’s future

April 8, 2004

KOKOMO, Ind.—University of Indianapolis (U of I) associate professor R. William Ayres will present “Iraq: The No-Win Situation?” at IU Kokomo on Wednesday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in Room 130 of the Kelley Student Center. Free and open to the public, the event is sponsored by the campus’ History/Political Science Club.

The talk will “focus on the future,” Ayres said, rather than rehash the circumstances under which the United States entered into armed conflict in Iraq last year. “Those are interesting questions, but all past tense,” Ayres said. “I want to address the plausible future scenarios in Iraq, given the present realities.” He said he worded his lecture title to challenge audiences’ expectations of what “winning” in Iraq might mean. Declaring a U.S. victory there “depends on how you define ‘winning,’ ” he said. After his talk, Ayres plans to invite questions from the audience on additional topics.

Ayres is an associate professor of international relations in the U of I History and Political Science Department and director of the university’s international relations program. Specializing in the study of international and ethnic conflicts, conflict resolution, and political psychology, Ayres said much of his research and writing has covered previous conflicts in the Middle East, with emphasis on civil wars and other internal state conflicts.

Guests to campus who do not have an IU Kokomo parking pass are asked to park in the lower level of the parking garage, located on the south end of campus.
