Four staffers retire after 85 years of campus service

April 29, 2004

KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo honored four retiring staff members April 28, celebrating their close to 85 years of combined service to the campus. Etta Simmons, Fred Sheagley, Jo Wilson and Elaine Briggs will all end their employment at IU Kokomo with the close of the academic year.

Simmons and Sheagley are both custodial workers. Simmons is retiring after 24 years and 11 months with the university. “Etta has always been highly conscientious about her responsibilities,” said Director of Physical Plant Lon Schroeder. “Well organized and friendly, she has done a great job in serving our customers in special facilities.”

In his 23 years and 7 months with IU Kokomo, Sheagley has been a “dependable and steady” employee, Schroeder said. “Fred puts others first before thinking of himself and has always contributed greatly but quietly to the success of his department. Quick with a smile and totally unflappable, he has set a good example for younger employees.”

Jo Wilson is retiring after 19.5 years. Wilson joined the campus staff in 1984 as an offset press operator. Her duties later included responsibilities as a duplicating and mail clerk and campus switchboard operator. Richard Sandy, senior duplicating operator, said Wilson took pride in her work. “When Jo did something, she wanted to do it right,” Sandy said. Wilson was also known for the collection of colorful stuffed bears that decorated her office area.

Elaine Briggs retires after 16.5 years of service to IU Kokomo. Briggs was hired in 1987 as an hourly employee for the Division of Continuing Studies. That same year, she moved to Telephone Services and became a full-time switchboard operator. In 1990, she became secretary to the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance. The current holder of that post, William Yost, thanked Briggs “for all the training she provided me in adjusting to Indiana University” when he came to the campus in 2000.

At the retirement party, Chancellor Ruth Person noted that Briggs helped inspire the creation of the IU Kokomo Welcome Center, opened in Kelley Student Center last year. Briggs suggested that a one-stop switchboard and information center was needed, assisting the campus community and visitors alike.

Person called the four retirees’ decades of service “tremendously commendable.”

“We really do appreciate the work that all of you do,” she said.

The IU Kokomo Staff Council added to the tributes by unveiling a plaque honoring campus staff employees who retire with 10 or more years of service. Briggs, Wilson, Sheagley and Simmons are the first whose names will appear on the plaque, which will hang in IU Kokomo’s Main Building.
