KOKOMO, Ind.—IU Kokomo students Amelissa James of Logansport, Chrissy Adams of Tipton, and Carri Luster of Kokomo will present their research findings during the 16th Undergraduate Intercampus Women’s Studies/Gender Studies Conference April 16 on the Kokomo campus. Titled “Women, Justice, Peace: Celebrating Our Students,” the conference features student presenters from all eight IU campuses discussing a variety of gender issues, as seen from different cultures and disciplines. Running from 9:30 a.m.–3 p.m., conference sessions are free and open to the public. Agendas will be available at the opening address in Kresge Auditorium in the Kelley Student Center. Amelissa James will offer an analysis of teenage girls and the magazines they read in a session titled “The Pain of Growth: Guiding Ourselves and Our Daughters.” James is a psychology major. Chrissy Adams and Carri Luster will take part in the session “The Narrative Voice of Women: Past, Present, and Future.” Adams, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in general studies, will present a report titled “The Man I Never Knew.” A humanities major, Luster will discuss fantasy writer Ursula K. LeQuin’s Sur. The day will also feature a free performance of the one-act play Virginia Woolf: A Room of One’s Own at 3 p.m. in Havens Auditorium. Debuted in February 2003 at IU Kokomo, the play was written by Betty-Joyce Symphony and Associate Professor of Communication Arts Colin Black, both of Kokomo. The play juxtaposes the 20th century novelist Virginia Woolf with three women in other time periods responding to Woolf’s work. Coleen Kebrdle of Kokomo, a 1989 IU Kokomo graduate, plays the author. Carri Luster, Shannon Driver, and Jennifer Stackhouse complete the cast. The play will also be performed at 8 p.m. on April 15. Reservations are required for free admission; call (765) 455-9248 or (765) 455-9258 to reserve seats. The IU Gender Studies Program sponsors the Women’s Studies/Gender Studies Conference. For more information on the conference, call (765) 455-9266. Guests to campus who do not have an IU Kokomo parking pass are asked to park in the lower level of the parking garage, located on the south end of campus.
