KOKOMO, Ind.—May kicks off with two free musical concerts on the Indiana University Kokomo campus. On Wednesday, May 5, the IU Kokomo/Howard County Community Band will present works ranging from a classical suite to patriotic and film themes. On Friday, May 7, the IUK Singers will offer a similarly broad program, with traditional, sacred, and satirical songs.

Both concerts will be held at 7 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium in the Kelley Student Center.

Kokomo High School Band Director Eric Thornbury directs the IU Kokomo Howard County Community Band, now in its second year of performing. The 35 members include Lecturer in Music Cindy Ison and seven IU Kokomo students: Anna Anderson of Logansport; David Salvagnini of Miami; and Deborah Bricker, Carisa Durham, Andrew Rosborough, Danielle Sexton, and Lindsey Swyers, all of Kokomo.

Highlights of the band concert will include the March from the First Suite by Gustav Holst, John Phillip Sousa’s “Sabre and Spurs,” and “The Wizard of Oz Fantasy.” Jackie Hunt will perform a clarinet solo in “When You Wish Upon a Star,” and Matt Evans will be featured on alto saxophone in “Someone to Watch Over Me.” The concert will run one hour without intermission.

In their May 7 concert, the IUK Singers will present the madrigal piece “My Bonnie Lass, She Smileth” by 16th century composer Thomas Morley, as well as its P.D.Q. Bach send-up, “My Bonnie Lass, She Smelleth.” Songs of inspiration, such as “Give Us Hope” and “There is a Balm in Gilead,” will share the bill with contemporary tunes “Under the Sea” and “Charade” and traditional favorites “Scarborough Fair” and “Danny Boy.”

David Britton directs the IUK Singers; Jason Dick is accompanist. Singers include Tara Buck of Greentown; Erica Foust of Roann; Rebecca Wright of Wabash; and Debbie Bricker, Jessica Harris, Jonathon Kenworthy, Shirley McIndoo, Walter McIndoo, Rachel Polk, Andrew Rosborough, Monica Spangler and Dan Stout, all of Kokomo.

Guests to campus who do not have an IU Kokomo parking pass are asked to park in the lower level of the parking garage, located on the south end of campus. Parking is free.
