KOKOMO, Ind.—Will 2005 be lucky Year 5 for Indiana University Kokomo's Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) chapter? Judge for yourself at a Tuesday, April 5, preview of the chapter's regional competition presentation. The preview starts at 4 p.m. in Hunt Hall auditorium.

At 1,600 university campuses in 40 countries, Students In Free Enterprise members promote the principles of free enterprise, market economics, entrepreneurship, and business ethics through educational and community service projects. Close to 20 SIFE teams from four-year colleges take part in the midwest regional SIFE collegiate competition, presenting annual reports of their year's activities to a judges panel composed of business executives.

Every year since 2000, regional judges have awarded top honors to the Kokomo chapter, sending them on to the national competition. Student presenters Andy Earl, Sabina Kedhi, Nathan Stout, and Brian van Camp hope to sustain that winning streak at this year's regional on April 6 and 7 in St. Louis, Mo. Earl and Kedhi live in Kokomo, Stout is from Tipton, and van Camp is from Bunker Hill.

The quartet will run through their 10-minute talk a few times during the dress rehearsal, and welcome audience reaction to help sharpen their delivery and message.

In the 2004–2005 academic year, close to 30 local SIFE members carried out 17 separate projects, including a 12-week course on the basics of money management for fifth graders at Howard Elementary School. SIFE members also adapted the course for use by Ukranian educators, and are arranging donations of computer hardware and software to schools in that country, which is struggling to learn capitalist practices after years of Soviet socialist rule.

In another new project, SIFE members worked with Howard County Habitat for Humanity to create a more efficient computer database of volunteer information.

According to Sam Walton Fellow Kathy Parkison, Ph.D., IU Kokomo faced regional competition in 2004 from much larger schools, including other IU campuses, and was still one of only two Indiana universities earning a national competition berth. (The other was Anderson University.) Parkison advises SIFE along with Fellow Joan Hoch. Both are members of the IU Kokomo School of Business faculty.
