KOKOMO, Ind.—Running unopposed, Kyle Etherington of Kokomo was elected as the 2005–2006 Executive President of the IU Kokomo student body on March 31. In the previous academic year, Etherington, a resident of Kokomo, was Vice President of Programming and Director of the Student Union Board, which plans and supervises most of the social and entertainment events on campus. He is a history/political science major. General Studies major Nicholas Stevens of Gas City won a three-way race for Executive Vice President, vying with Danielle Blevins of Peru and Kevin Stage of Greentown. Blevins is a criminal justice major. Stage is studying electrical engineering through the Purdue University College of Technology Kokomo on the IU Kokomo campus. Michael Smith of Peru will start his second term as Vice President of Athletics. Michael Glassburn of Elwood is the new Vice President of Programming. Smith is majoring in computer information systems; Glassburn, in communications arts. Six Student Senate candidates were elected for 2005–2007, by receiving the highest popular vote. They were Shu Ting Zhao, Galveston, business; Kayla Eikenberry, Bringhurst, University Division; Elijah Barry, Kokomo, marketing/distribution and management/human resources; Erik Homkes, Russiaville, nursing; Chad Andrews, Sharpsville, English; and Jeanie Savage, Tipton, criminal justice. The next three top vote-getters join the Senate by appointment and will serve for one year. They are Rachel Harrington, Rochester, psychology; Stephanie Hill, Kokomo, criminal justice; and Venyette Charles, Indianapolis, University Division. Danielle Blevins, education major Ashley Keller of Peru, and psychology major Christina Sommer of Kokomo will serve the second years of their terms as student senators. Sommer will also serve a second year as Treasurer for the Student Senate. Accounting major Effie Jones of Lafayette will be Student Activities Treasurer. Jones was appointed this semester to fill a vacancy left by Candy Cheung of Kokomo, who is graduating in May. Director of Student Development and Campus Life Sarah Hawkins said that Student Government Association members act “as a communication link between the student body and the faculty and administration of the university, voicing the needs and concerns of their constituents.” Many SGA members serve on university committees, providing student input on a variety of topics and projects. “The student government is responsible for allocating the Student Activity Fee, which supports a wide variety of co-curricular events and programs throughout the year. SGA members also work to promote cultural, service, and social programs, appropriate to the needs and interests of the student body,” Hawkins said.
