KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo's School of Business again holds the state title in the national Collegiate Investment Challenge. A team composed of M.B.A. student Joe McClelland and graduating seniors Erica Jackson, Bryan Bitner, and Christy Cockrell was ranked first in the state of Indiana and ninth across the nation. Kokomo residents Bitner and Cockrell will receive bachelor's degrees in finance and economics on May 10. Jackson of Greentown will earn a degree in management and human resources. Five teams of students in an Investments course, taught by Professor of Finance Dianne Roden, Ph.D., competed in the 2005 Challenge, an investment simulation competition that provides hands-on stock market experience. An IU Kokomo team placed first in Indiana in the 2003 Collegiate Investment Challenge, and campus teams have consistently ranked in the top 10 percent of Challenge participants nationally for eight years. Roden said that more than 130 universities were represented in this year's Challenge. Each team started with a fictional account of $100,000 and made simulated trades in stocks and options using the World Wide Web. Students vied to show the most profitable portfolios from the period of February 7–April 8, 2005. “This hands-on experience ties together many of the topics covered in the Investments class in a meaningful way, and it adds excitement to the class,” Roden said. “Many topics such as selling short, buying on margin, and trading options are much easier to understand when you have actually done them yourself. Today's volatile markets make investment decisions quite challenging. However, I tell my students that in finance- and in life in general-winners take chances.” For more information on courses and programs of the IU Kokomo School of Business, visit www.iuk.edu/business or call (765) 455-9275.
