SIFE team wins regional competition for sixth straight year

April 13, 2006

KOKOMO, Ind.—The Indiana University Kokomo Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team won a sixth consecutive championship in the Saint Louis SIFE USA Regional Competition on April 5. The team will compete against teams from more than 20 other regions at the SIFE USA National Exposition May 21–23 in Kansas City, Mo.

Active on more than 1,800 university campuses in 40-plus countries, SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that teach market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills, and business ethics. SIFE team projects are judged at competition on creativity, innovation, and effectiveness.

On an evaluation sheet for this year’s IU Kokomo presentation, one SIFE judge wrote, “Indiana University Kokomo rocks. Innovative, exciting, relevant projects. I really believe you are making a positive impact in your community. Great job.”

This year’s team presenters include Brooke Mills of Bringhurst, Sonja Burton of Sharpsville, Danielle Silvey of Tipton, and Jessica Arnold, Andrew Groves, and Terrie Lester, all of Kokomo. Joe Cooney and Rich Sorrel, both of Kokomo, served as the tech crew.

The group presented their 2005–2006 projects: development of promotional ideas for Inventrek Technology Park and downtown Kokomo businesses, hosting an ethics bowl, andteaching basic economic principals to fifth graders.

Called the Mini Model, this last project involved SIFE members teaching the basics in economics to Howard Elementary fifth graders through fun, interactive lessons. It won 2006 honors in an Individual Topic competition focused on teaching financial literacy

“These students have much to be proud of as the judges gave them excellent marks and comments on their work and their presentation,” said faculty advisor Kathy Parkison, Ph.D. In the week before the national competition, SIFE will host a dress rehearsal open to the public. We would welcome all to attend and see the top level work that these students are capable of,” Parkison said. Parkison and Joan Hoch both work with SIFE as Sam Walton Fellows.
