Film Transamerica plays at IU Kokomo

April 13, 2006

KOKOMO, Ind.—The Oscar®-nominated film Transamerica will be shown at Indiana University Kokomo on Thursday, April 20. Free and open to the public, the 7 p.m. showing will be in Kresge Auditorium. The film is rated R and is 103 minutes long.

Actress Felicity Huffman made Transamerica shortly before achieving small-screen fame in the television show Desperate Housewives. Huffman earned wide praise and an Academy Award® nomination for her portrayal of Bree Osbourne, a transsexual preparing for surgery who discovers she has a son who is now in jail. Masquerading as a missionary, she bails him out, and the pair drives across the United States, gradually learning about each other.

Writing for the Guardian Unlimited Web site, reviewer Peter Bradshaw said Transamerica wins its audiences over “by declining to grandstand on sexual or political issues.” Instead, writer/director Duncan Tucker uses the plot’s complex issues to create “a very easy and even happy comedy,” Bradshaw wrote. “[Tucker] is helped by Felicity Huffman, giving one of the funniest, subtlest performances to be seen this year.”

The film is sponsored by the IU Kokomo Student Union Board. Call (765) 455-9203 for information.
