Student efforts raise $7,000 for domestic violence programs
April 27, 2006
KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo teams raised more than $7,000 for local domestic violence programs, in connection with the April 25 Angel Walk and Take Back the Night rally. Family Service Association of Howard County Inc. collaborated with IU Kokomo’s American Democracy Project Committee for FSA’s third annual Angel Walk fundraiser.
The day after the walk, FSA reported that it had received a total $11,556 in Angel Walk contributions, including $7,305 from campus volunteers. The agency expected to receive some additional pledges toward its goal of $12,000.
Aimee Ash, campus coordinator of programming and applied learning, estimated that some 275 people participated in the one-mile Angel Walk north of campus. Additionally, 115 IU Kokomo students completed class projects looking at issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. Posters, artwork, brochures, a video, and a Web site reflecting the student work were displayed before and after the walk in Alumni Hall. Twelve faculty members integrated the topics into their courses, according to Ash. Another 50 students got involved in the walk through campus clubs and organizations, she added.
The IU Kokomo Office of Student Activities will award pizza parties to the three student groups who raised the most donations. Placing first were students from a Nursing Research course taught by Associate Professor Sue Hendricks, Ed.D. The class brought in $1,994 in donations. A Freshman Learning Community team, coordinated by Dean Sue Sciame-Giesecke, Ph.D., took second place with $1,724 in donations. An Introduction to Early Childhood Education course, taught by Professor Shirley Aamidor, Ph.D., finished third, with donations of $815.
Before the Angel Walk, Patricia Davis, a radiography major from Logansport, was honored for writing the best essay on domestic violence. The American Democracy Project sponsored the essay contest and awarded Davis a $500 scholarship for the 2006–2007 academic year.
