April 27, 2006

KOKOMO, Ind.—Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) has recognized Assistant Professor of Chemistry Songwen Xie, Ph.D., of Indiana University Kokomo, for her outstanding doctoral dissertation, Xie completed her doctoral studies at SIUC in 2005, and received second place honors in the university’s annual outstanding dissertation awards program.

In her research, Xie synthesized estrogenic compounds that did not contain steroid components and described how they affected prostate and breast cancer cells. She found these compounds reduced the spread of prostate cancer cells without the feminizing effects of regular estrogen treatment.

Anthropologist Matthew A. Tornow won the top prize for his dissertation regarding primates.
