Cool treats, hot jazz at Community Band concert

April 27, 2006

KOKOMO, Ind.—Ice cream, good music, and fresh air will be the attractions when the IU Kokomo Howard County Community Band presents a free outdoor concert and ice cream social Wednesday, May 3, on IU Kokomo’s Earth Stage.

The public is invited to bring blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy the 6 p.m. concert. Kokomo High School Band Director Eric Thornbury leads the band, which includes IU Kokomo students and staff members as musicians, as well as community players.

A newly formed jazz ensemble, composed of Community Band members, will offer a few pre-concert selections. The full concert program will include Alfred Reed’s “Ode for Trumpet,” featuring Jeremey Snyder on trumpet solo; a medley of hits from the 1980s; music from the animated film The Incredibles; and a patriotic salute titled “Duty, Honor, Country.”

The IUK Singers will join the band for two numbers: “The Great Steamboat Race” and the finale, Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.”

In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved into Kelley Student Center, Room 130.

Persons without campus parking passes should follow the signs for special event parking for the concert.
