April 24, 2006

Article mentions students living in BUNKER HILL, GALVESTON, KOKOMO, RUSSIAVILLE, and WESTFIELD.

KOKOMO, Ind.—American Idol comes to Kokomo in the form of the IU Kokomo Idol competition Thursday, April 27, at 6 p.m. in Havens Auditorium. Ten student singers will perform for judges’ and audience votes. General admission is $5; IU Kokomo students, faculty, and staff will be admitted with campus ID for $2.

Those putting their voices on the line are Eric Lucas of Bunker Hill, studying in University Division; Stefanie Lorenz of Westfield, Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.); Russiaville students Aubrey Birden, general studies, and Derek Bishop, University Division; and Kokomo residents Kenneth Beasley, communication arts; Jessica Criswell, education; Caleb Harvey, communication arts; Melissa Hinze, M.B.A.; Wendy Klemme, general studies; and Nicholas Weed, history/political science.

All 10 would-be Idols will sing in a preliminary round and get feedback from the judges. In the second round, five semifinalists will perform an additional song, and the audience will vote for their favorite from the five. A judge’s panel will then choose the top three.

In place of American Idol’s Simon, Paula, and Randy, IU Kokomo judges will include University Division Counselor Rikk Terhune, Lecturer in Music Cindy Ison, and Lecturer in Communication Arts Chris Clemens. Clemens will also direct the show.

Benjamin Liechty, a communication arts major from Galveston, will host the Idol competition, which is cosponsored by the IU Kokomo Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) and the IUK Singers. Additional coordinators include Matthew Reynolds, University Division, of Galveston, along with Ashley Campbell, University Division; Scott Fidler, criminal justice; and Paul Rounds, psychology, all of Kokomo.

Additional support comes from Hollywood Tan, New Breed Tatoo, Olive Garden, Kokomo Sports Center, the IU Kokomo Bookstore, and Havens Auditorium manager Jeff Gegner.

Persons without campus parking passes should follow the signs for special event parking for IU Kokomo Idol.
