Speech Olympics planned April 24

KOKOMO, Ind.—Six students will compete in the Spring 2006 Speech Olympics Monday, April 24, at Indiana University Kokomo. Open to the public, the Olympics will be held in Kresge Auditorium starting at 7 p.m.; admission is free.

Speakers and their topics will include

• William Hamby of Bunker Hill, studying in the University Division. Topic: “Illusion of Security.”

• Amber Harbaugh of Arcadia, business major. Topic: “Crack Cocaine.”

• Candace Jones of Kokomo, humanities major. Topic: “Voices of Destruction.”

• Stephen Lewis of Peru, engineering major (with Purdue University College of Technology programs at IU Kokomo). Topic: “Ethics in Technology.”

• Janna Mallay of Logansport, psychology major. Topic: “Procrastination.”

• Cassie Myers of Sharpsville, history/political science major. Topic: “Pain in the Patoot Pancreas: The Untold Story of Diabetes.”

Top students from public speaking courses are selected to participate in the Speech Olympics, which is sponsored by the School of Arts and Sciences. Event coordinator Chris Clemens, a lecturer in communications arts, thanked the faculty members and students who judged the semi-finalist rounds of the competition: Donna McLean, Cathy Hightower, Raul Mosley, Catherine Barnes, Kristen Snoddy, Sue Ridlen, Mavis Barnett, Ann Cameron, Melissa Heffernan, Navi Van Wormer, Carri Luster, and Colburn Lambert. Lambert won the Spring 2005 Speech Olympics.
